Introduction

The Neapolitan Mastiff originated from mainland Italy.

Formerly, it was used as a fighting dog in the Colosseum arena and also as a war dog by the Roman military.

This dog is popularly used as a house guard dog.

This type of dog is forbidden to be kept in Singapore, and even in Romania where you must have a certification to keep this dog. As with most breed-specific bans, this is mostly due to a lack of proper training and supervision.

Its stature is large in accordance with its function as a watchdog.

The skin of his face is folded so it makes the dog looks 'slow'.

Although its ability is typically limited to a short range, this breed was once trusted to guard the gates of the Roman Emperor's palace.

Breed

The American Kennel Club formally recognized the Neapolitan Mastiff in 2004.

These medium energy dogs are known as dignified, watchful, loyal, and strong.

The Neapolitan Mastiff is an ancient dog breed that has been known since the time of the Roman Empire under the reign of Julius Caesar.

The Neapolitan Mastiff, commonly called Mastino, is included in the Mastiff family.

It is about 26-31 inches high and weighs between 110-150 lbs.

Appearance

The Neapolitan Mastiff has a straight posture.

On its face, there are many wrinkles and a slanted nose.

The skin of its body looks saggy because the surface area is larger than the body area, so it can be pulled like a towel.

This dog has strong bones and a sturdy body.

It is really suitable as a guardian dog.

Even though the appearance may look strange to some, there are so many people who love to keep this dog as a companion.

Nutrition

It is recommended to provide feed formulated to large-sized breeds. It is highly recommended to discuss your dog’s feed with your veterinarian and/or breeder in order to determine the size and frequency of meals in order to ensure a healthy, long life. It is also important to ensure that clean, fresh water is always available.

Grooming

The Neapolitan Mastiff needs regular grooming.

Baths will help keep its coat always looking clean.

This dog likes to do outdoor activities and this means that the coat will often get dirty.

It can be a bit challenging to groom this dog.

The nails must be trimmed regularly to avoid cracking and overgrowth.

The ears also need to be checked regularly to prevent infection.

The teeth also must be brushed regularly to keep them clean and healthy.

Exercise

30-60 minutes of daily exercise is recommended.

The Neapolitan Mastiff is a bit protective around strangers so the owner should properly train this dog on regular basis to obey its master against unwanted behavior.

Since this is a giant dog, you will need to train the dog in outdoor situations as well.

You also need to build an outdoor crate for its dog house.

The Neapolitan Mastiff likes to play with children but you need to supervise them.

Pet Crate Size

Pet Crates Direct recommends a 54" dog crate* for most adult Neapolitan Mastiffs.
