The Staffordshire Bull Terrier was originated from Staffordshire, England back in 19th century. The ancestors of this dog breed were Bull and Terrier. This dog breed was originally bred for bull baiting, bear baiting, lion baiting and dog fighting, but as these practices became banned it became a show dog and beloved pet. The Staffordshire Terrier found its way to America in early 1870 which earned them other nicknames such as Pit Bull, Yankee Terrier, and American Bull Terrier.

Due to the stigma from being a fighter dog, some insurance companies may not cover Staffordshire Bull Terriers. Therefore, prior consultation with insurance companies is important.

Breed

The American Kennel Club formally recognized the Staffordshire Bull Terrier in 1974. These medium energy dogs require moderate to intense exercise on a daily basis in order to prevent less desirable behaviors. This dog breed has the characteristics of being affectionate, fearless, loyal, and a fun-loving dog.

Many people confuse Staffordshire Bull terrier with the Pit Bull Terrier, and although they are separate breeds, they actually share the same ancestor. Although it was originally bred as fighter, this breed is gentler than 100 years ago. This dog bred has the reputation of being aggressive, but they are actually loving family dogs. As with all dogs, early, consistent, and quality obedience training is a must.

Appearance

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier has a muscular and stocky build which can be intimidating to some. They have a broad head, demanding jaw bone, and a short muzzle. This dog breed has a glossy and short coat, providing easy care. Since their coat is short, they do not do well in cold weather.

Staffordshire terrier may look intimidating, but they are actually an affectionate dog. They can serve as guardian dog as well as lovely family pet.

Nutrition

It is recommended to provide feed formulated to medium-sized breeds. It is highly recommended to discuss your dog’s feed with your veterinarian and/or breeder in order to determine size and frequency of meals in order to ensure a health, long life. It is also important to ensure that clean, fresh water is always available.

Grooming

This dog breed has low grooming requirements thanks to its short coat. However, they still need regular brushing with a soft-bristle brush to keep their coat shiny. It is also important to keep them in good health with regular baths.

Regular nail trimming is also recommended to prevent overgrowth, which can make it difficult to walk.  The Staffordshire Bull Terrier can be a good home companion because of their minimal shedding.

Exercise

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier needs daily exercise to maintain their muscles and expend their energy requirements. Long walks, jogs, or playing in the yard can be good exercise. Since this dog has medium energy level, they need space to be active such as a fenced yard. If they do not get enough exercise, they can get bored and potentially act out with unwanted behaviors.

Pet Crate Size

Pet Crates Direct recommends 30” dog crates* for most adult Staffordshire Bull Terriers.
