The Pekingese is an ancient dog breed, which DNA evidence confirms is as one of the oldest in the world. This dog breed is believed to have originated from China around 2,000 years ago. The dog's name was borrowed from the China capital town at the time, Peking (now Beijing).

The 'Peke' was believed to be a companion for princes, nobles, and imperial family members. In 1980, the Pekingese was brought outside of China and began to gain popularity around the world. Today, the Pekingese ranks 49th, according to the AKC.

Breed

The American Kennel Club formally recognized the Pekingese in 1906. These low energy dogs are known as the Lion Dog, Peke, Pelchie Dog, and Peking Lion Dog. They are called Lion Dog because their hair resembles Chinese guardian lions.

In general this dog breed's personality is loyal, affectionate, and regal in manner. They are not the best suited for families with small children because it can be possessive of their toys and food. This dog also demands a lot of attention. Aside from their possessive behavior, a well-trained Pekingese can be well-behaved.

Appearance

This dog's appearance has hardly changed over the more than 2,000 years of its existence. They have a flat face with big eyes and a lot of wrinkles. The Peke weighs between 7 to 14 pounds, while their height ranges between 6 to 9 inches.

Nutrition

It is recommended to provide feed formulated to small-sized breeds. It is highly recommended to discuss your dog’s feed with your veterinarian and/or breeder in order to determine size and frequency of meals in order to ensure a health, long life. It is also important to ensure that clean, fresh water is always available.

Grooming

The Pekingese requires weekly coat brushing using a small and soft brush. If they are show dog, they will require more detailed grooming. Before brushing their coat, make sure to mist it with water lightly to prevent it from breaking.

Since they have wrinkles on their face, daily face cleaning around the eyes with a damp cotton ball is recommended. It is also important to keep the skin folds clean to prevent infection and bacteria. In general, the Pekingese requires regular baths about twice a month.

Exercise

The Peke can be happy in both an apartment and a big home. They do not require intense activity to keep them healthy and happy. They enjoy regular walks and love playing outdoors.

The Pekingese will get less playful as they get older. It is also better to make them walk on a leash rather than keep them in a tote bag. This helps them to explore their surroundings and socialize with other animals.

Pet Crate Size

Pet Crates Direct recommends 30” dog crates* for most adult Pekingese.
