The English Springer Spaniel originates from England. They are the descendants of the Norfolk or Shropshire Spaniels from the 19th century and was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1910. Standing 20 inches tall and weighing 50 pounds, the male English Springer Spaniel is a tough and speedy hunter (the female English Springer Spaniel is an inch shorter and 10 pounds lighter). It is the 26th most popular breed in the United States. Oval and deep eyes give them a gentle, lovable look. With a sociable attitude and being easily trainable, they make excellent family companions. They are people pleasers who seek their family's affection and do not do well if neglected.

Breed

The American Kennel Club formally recognized the English Springer Spaniel in 1910. These medium energy dogs are known as obedient, friendly and playful. They are eager to please family and fun to be with. They can be busy and hardworking in the field, utilizing their nature as a hunter. They typically do not bark unnecessarily.

Appearance

These sporting dogs are medium in size with a compact body and feathered ears, chest, brisket, and legs. Its hair is moderately long. Their proportion is well-balanced without exaggeration in any body part and their overall look is symmetrical. They are a balance of beauty and endurance with a proud carriage and strong, muscular legs.

They have an outer coat with medium-length hair and flat or wavy feathering. Its undercoat is short and soft. A healthy, well-bred English Springer Spaniel has a clean and glossy coat. The eyes are the appeal of this Springer dog. They are oval and deep with dark colors, giving the breed a gentle expression. The ears are long and hang near the cheeks, also being feathered.  Its tail is docked.

Nutrition

It is recommended to provide feed formulated to medium-sized breeds. It is highly recommended to discuss your dog’s feed with your veterinarian and/or breeder in order to determine size and frequency of meals in order to ensure a health, long life. It is also important to ensure that clean, fresh water is always available.

Grooming

The English Springer Spaniel will shed seasonally. Trimming and brushing should be done regularly to maintain the coat’s health and gloss, by removing the dead undercoat. A routine check of its ears is a must to remove wax and debris to prevent infection. Maintain its dental health by brushing their teeth regularly.

Exercise

Bring the English Springer Spaniel to the park to keep them in optimum health, physically and mentally. Swimming is their favourite workout, but they also love walks. They like to be part of family activities, play fetch, and to go hunting as a sport. They are companion dogs and will appreciate time with their owners.
