The Dachshund is short-legged with a long body, belonging to the hound family. The original breed was developed to chase, scent, and flush out badgers and other pest-like animals. The miniature dog breed was developed to hunt small prey such as rabbits. In the US, this dog also used to hunt prairie dogs and track down wounded deer. This dog comes in 15 colors, with 6 different marking combinations. The Dachshund is prone to health issues such as diabetes, back problems, joint problems, and weight gain, but with proper maintenance, it is a healthy breed.

Breed

The American Kennel Club formally recognized the Dachshund in 1885. These medium energy dogs are also known as sausage dogs, hot dogs and wiener dogs. The dog is classified as a hound. This dog is originally developed for hunting with a good snout, the hunting spirit, and a long tongue, which makes it well-suited for work underground and in the bush.

Appearance

This dog has a long body with short legs and a robust muscular frame. They are low to the ground. The front paws are large and shaped like a paddle which can be used for extreme digging. They have skin that loose, pliable, and elastic, without excessive wrinkling. Its loose skin is strong enough not to tear while chasing down the prey. This dog has a large chest to provide enough oxygen and increased lung capacity for a maximal stamina when hunting prey underground. Their long snout is mainly used to sniff and absorbs odors.

Nutrition

It is recommended to provide feed formulated to small sized breeds. It is highly recommended to discuss your dog’s feed with your veterinarian and breeder to determine size and frequency of meals in order to ensure a health and lifespan. Also, it is important to provide clean and fresh water.

Grooming

This dog requires regular grooming as the skin comes in smooth, longhaired, and wirehair coats. You can learn to groom the dogs by yourself; however, it is advisable to use a professional groomer. Their nails require regular trimming to avoid cracking and overgrowth. You should check the dog ears frequently to prevent build up debris and wax which can cause infection. Also, the dog teeth should regularly be brushed.

Exercise

The Dachshund has medium energy. When owners are with them it can be kind of hard to stay quiet and in a bad mood. They are a curious and upbeat dog. They are a playful companion, lovable, and ideal pets for many homes, even those with children (with proper supervision and training). The dogs require moderate exercise and are adaptable to most living environments. Similar to other hound-types, this dog requires early socialization and obedience training to make them a well-rounded pet.

Pet Crate Size

Pet Crate Direct recommends 30” dog crates* for most adult Dachshunds.
