Introduction
Also known as the Bingley Terrier or the Waterside Terrier, the Airedale Terrier originated in the valley of River Aire, Yorkshire, England.
This dog is also known to be the largest one in the terrier group. Regarding the breeding history, the exact lineage of the dog is unclear. It is believed that the Old English Black and Tan Terrier and the Otterhound are the ancestors of Airedale Terrier.
This dog breed has been used for a variety of different roles. Originally, people used it as working farm dogs. In the 1800s, the farmers in English Aire and Wharfe Rivers had issues with vermin. So they bred the Airedale Terrier with the ability to hunt vermin like rats, martens, and foxes.
They can hunt on the ground as well as in the water. Besides working dogs, they also have served as military dogs, police dogs, and guide dogs.
Breed
The American Kennel Club formally recognized the Airedale Terrier in 1888.
These medium energy dogs are known as smart, courageous, and friendly. Although some terriers can have a hard time being around children, Airedale Terriers are typically very calm and tolerant of kids even when they are still young.
The Airedale Terriers have a strong desire to hunt small animals. That potentially makes them a big threat for small pets. With proper training, this can be overcome, but it is still best to keep small animals safe.
They are quite intelligent allowing them to learn things fast. But, their intelligence may also backfire to the owners as their smarts can also make them too stubborn to train. Hence, you must start obedience training early.
Appearance
The Airedale Terriers have a large body with a deep chest and long, flat head. Their eyes are dark yet thoughtful. They have a couple of pointed and folded ears.
This dog breed is most common in a black and tan coat. Their shoulders, bellies, and legs are in tan color; while their saddle is in either black or red color.
The height of the Airedale Terrier is 23 inches, and they can weigh between 50-70 pounds.
Nutrition
It is recommended to provide feed formulated to medium-sized breeds. It is highly recommended to discuss your dog’s feed with your veterinarian and/or breeder in order to determine the size and frequency of meals in order to ensure a healthy, long life. It is also important to ensure that clean, fresh water is always available.
Grooming
The Airedale Terrier requires regular care to keep them in good condition. You must brush them several times a week. Regular grooming is necessary to reduce shedding. You can groom and strip them about 3 to 4 times every single year.
Exercise
Early obedience training is very important to this dog breed. Furthermore, you must provide interesting exercises to them, or they will easily get bored. It is recommended to provide between 20 and 60 minutes of daily exercise.
